Privacy Policy

This site has no contact form, no comments, no newsletter and no advertising. What is left is the small amount of data any website unavoidably handles.

Written in plain English because a policy nobody can read protects nobody. If anything below changes, this page changes first and the date at the top moves.

The short version

What Do We Actually Collect?

Directly from you

Nothing, unless you send an email. There is no form on this site.

Automatically

Standard server request logs and the security records our hosting and network provider keep: IP address, browser, page requested, time.

Cookies we set

None for reading. WordPress sets cookies only if somebody signs in to the admin area, which means us, not you.

Third party cookies

Our network provider may set a short lived security cookie to tell human traffic from automated traffic.

Analytics

None running at the time of writing. If we ever add one, it will be named on this page before it is switched on.

Advertising

None. No ad networks, no trackers, no retargeting pixels.

Sold or shared

Never. There is no commercial relationship in which your data would be the product.

Detail

Server Logs and Security Records

Our host and our network provider record requests to the site so that it can be kept running and defended.

These records typically contain your IP address, the page you requested, the time of the request, and your browser and operating system as your browser reports them. They exist to diagnose faults and to block automated attacks. We do not use them to build a profile of you, and we do not combine them with anything else.

Retention is set by the providers rather than by us, and is measured in weeks rather than years.

What About Images and Files?

Images are stored and served from this domain, and compressed by a plugin that runs on our server. Nothing is loaded from an external image host.

Web fonts are also served from this domain rather than from a font provider. That is a deliberate choice: it means your browser never has to contact a third party to render the type on this site.

If You Email Us

Your message and address sit in an ordinary mailbox until the conversation is finished, and are kept afterwards only so we can answer a follow up.

We do not add correspondents to any list, because there is no list. If you would like your correspondence deleted, ask and it will be.

Your side of it

What Rights Do You Have?

Depending on where you live, you may have a legal right to ask what personal data an operator holds about you, to have it corrected, or to have it erased.

Given the above, in almost every case the honest answer is that we hold nothing about you beyond a line in a server log. Ask anyway if you want that confirmed in writing.

  • Ask what we hold: write to the address below and we will tell you.
  • Ask for deletion: any email correspondence will be deleted on request.
  • Server logs: these sit with our host and provider, and we will pass a request on.

Children

This site is written for adults who own tools. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect anything from them.

Links Out

Where an entry links to another site, that site has its own policy and its own practices, and we have no control over either.

We link out sparingly and only where the destination adds something a reader needs.
