Stitchdown or Goodyear Welt: Which Boot Can Actually Be Rebuilt?
Both can be rebuilt, and that is the point of both. The difference is how many times, how much it costs, and how many shops will take the job.

What Is the Actual Difference?
Where the upper goes. In a Goodyear welt the upper turns inward and is stitched to a rib on the insole. In a stitchdown it turns outward and is stitched down through the midsole.
Everything else follows from that one decision. Turning the upper inward gives a narrow, elegant sole edge and a boot that can be taken apart cleanly at the welt. Turning it outward gives a wide flange, a boot that is harder to make look refined, and a joint with more material in it. Neither is a compromise on quality. They are answers to different questions.
Think of it as the difference between a bolted flange and a lap joint in metalwork. One is neat and serviceable at a defined seam. The other is broader, uglier and carries more load across the join. Arguing about which is better in the abstract is a waste of an afternoon.
How Do You Tell Them Apart in a Shop?
Look at the sole edge from the side. If the upper leather is visibly wrapped outward and stitched flat, it is a stitchdown. If it disappears at a narrow welt strip, it is a Goodyear.
Four seconds, no tools, works through a shop window. The commoner mistake is not confusing the two constructions with each other, it is confusing either of them with a cemented boot that has decorative stitching moulded into the sole edge. That stitching goes nowhere and holds nothing.
- Real stitching sits proud and irregular. Under a loupe you can see the thread rise and fall over the leather. Moulded stitching is perfectly even because it came out of a mould.
- Follow the line around the heel. Genuine welt stitching usually stops at the heel breast. Decorative stitching often runs all the way round because there was no reason for it to stop.
- Press the sole edge with a thumbnail. A welted boot has leather or cork under there and gives slightly. A cemented sole with a moulded edge is uniform rubber.
- Ask what the resole costs. A brand that builds repairable boots knows the answer and will tell you. A brand that does not will change the subject to warranty.

Same test as a knife, honestly. I tell people to look at the handle where it meets the tang. If you can see fasteners, somebody expected to open it. If it is one smooth moulded piece, nobody did. You are not judging quality, you are reading whether the person who built it planned for a second life.
Rebuild Counts, Side by Side
Goodyear, usually. The rib on the insole is a purpose built stitching platform, and a good one will accept three or four resoles before it gives out.
A stitchdown carries its stitching through the flange of the upper itself. That flange is real upper leather, and every time it is unpicked and restitched it loses a little. Two rebuilds is normal, three is good going, and the third one usually involves trimming the flange back and accepting a slightly different fit.
The counterweight is that a stitchdown puts more material between your foot and the ground at the join, which is why the construction persists in logging and wildland fire work where boots take punishment sideways rather than just downward. Our nine season pair is a stitchdown, and it has taken two soles with a patched welt on the second.
What actually decides the count is not the construction name but four conditions underneath it:
- How much platform there was to begin with. A generous rib or a wide flange gives a shop something to work with on the third attempt.
- Whether the first resole was done well. A hurried job that wanders off the original stitch line costs you a rebuild you have not had yet.
- How wet the boot has lived. Leather soaked and dried repeatedly tears at the stitch holes rather than holding.
- Whether the upper is still worth it. The sole count is academic once the flex crease has cracked through.

The Shop List Is Shorter for Stitchdown
Because the job is harder to do well and the equipment is less common. A shop set up for Goodyear work will often decline a stitchdown rather than do it badly.
This is the part of the decision that has nothing to do with the boot. Two shops within 90 miles of us will take stitchdown work. Twenty years ago there were six. If your nearest stitchdown resoler is in another state, the freight and the twelve week queue become part of the construction’s real cost, and a Goodyear boot you can get rebuilt locally may serve you better than a technically tougher one you cannot.
The Third Option Nobody Mentions
Blake stitched, and the reason it rarely comes up is not quality. It is that the machine to reopen it is rare.
- A Blake stitch runs straight through insole, midsole and outsole in a single line, inside the boot.
- It makes a lighter, more flexible boot with a very narrow sole edge, which is why dress boots use it.
- Reopening it requires a Blake machine, and the number of shops in the interior west that have one you could count on one hand.
- So a Blake boot is repairable in theory and, for most people outside a large city, disposable in practice.
Which is the same lesson as everywhere else in the log: construction sets the ceiling, and local repair capacity sets what you actually get.
So What Should You Buy?
The construction your nearest competent shop will take, in the heaviest form your work justifies. In that order.
For most people that means a Goodyear welt, because the shop list is longer and the rebuild count is higher. For anyone working ground that comes at the boot sideways, a stitchdown earns its shorter rebuild count. Neither answer holds if the upper is thin, because the sole is the half you can replace and the upper is the half you cannot.

Everyone argues about the construction and nobody looks at the leather above it. I have watched Lowell turn down beautifully welted boots because the upper had gone hard and cracked at the flex. Thickness is not the whole story either: a thinner hide that has been kept fed will outlast a heavy one that has been soaked and dried forty times with nothing put back into it. Whatever you buy, the upper is the part you are stuck with.

It is worth noticing how few categories of gear still work this way. Boots and knives are two of them. The reason a maker who builds custom knives one at a time will happily rehandle a blade twenty years later is the same reason a welted boot exists at all: somebody designed the joint expecting it to be opened.
