Greases, Oils and Dressings: What Actually Keeps a Leather Boot Alive
Dressing leather is not waterproofing. It is putting back the fats that walking and drying take out, so the fibres stop cutting each other when the boot bends.

What Is Leather Dressing Actually Doing?
Replacing fat. Leather is a fibre structure held apart by oils, and every wetting and drying cycle takes some of those oils out. Dressing puts them back.
Waterproofing is a side effect that people mistake for the purpose. The real job is lubrication between fibres. Dry leather bends by dragging its own fibres across each other, and that is what produces the cracks across a flex crease that end a boot. Fed leather bends by sliding.
The closest analogy is the oil in a gearbox. You do not top it up so the casing looks shiny. You top it up so the parts inside stop grinding on each other, and the visible result is simply that nothing has failed.
Grease, Oil or Wax?
Oil penetrates, grease sits in the surface, wax sits on top. Most boots want oil occasionally and grease at the seams, and almost none of them want much wax.

Silicone Sprays Do More Harm Than Good
Harm, mostly, on leather that you intend to keep. They form a film that keeps water out and keeps dressing out with it.
A silicone treated boot beads water impressively for a fortnight and then stops, and by then you have a sealed surface that will not take oil. I have had boots on the bench that were physically difficult to feed because of years of spray. The leather underneath was dry as paper.
How Often, and How Much?
Twice a year for a working boot, and much less product than the tin suggests. A thin coat that soaks in beats a thick one that sits there.
The two natural moments are the start of the wet season and the end of it. Anything more frequent is usually people treating dressing as a ritual rather than a service. Four signs it is actually due:
- Water darkens the leather instantly instead of beading briefly and then soaking slowly.
- The flex crease feels stiff when you bend the boot in your hands rather than folding softly.
- The grain looks pale and dusty at the toe and along the welt line.
- A thumbnail leaves a light mark that stays visible. Fed leather closes back up.

The over application problem is identical in waxed cotton and I see it constantly. People melt half a tin into a jacket, it goes heavy and tacky, picks up every seed in the field, and the wax that did not soak in just sits there collecting dirt. Thin coats, worked in warm, wiped back afterwards. Same discipline, different material.
The Mistake That Ruins Boots
Drying them fast. A boot put next to a stove, on a radiator or in front of a heater cooks the oils out of the leather in a single evening.
This does more damage than any amount of walking. Wet leather that dries slowly at room temperature comes back. Wet leather that dries at 60 degrees comes back hard, and hard leather cracks at the first hard flex. Every winter I would see two or three pairs that had aged five years in one week beside a wood stove.
- Pull the insoles and the liners out. Air moves through the boot rather than around it.
- Stuff loosely with newspaper and change it once. It pulls moisture out without heat.
- Dry at room temperature, away from any heat source. Two days is normal and fine.
- Dress them once they are dry, not while damp. Oil on wet leather sits on the water rather than going in.
A Season’s Routine
Four jobs a year. Total time about ninety minutes, total cost under twenty dollars, and it is the highest return maintenance anywhere in the log.
- Before the wet season: clean with a brush and water, dry slowly, then a thin coat of oil worked into the uppers and a little grease along the welt line.
- Mid season: clean off salt and mud whenever they are caked on. Salt draws moisture and oils out of leather faster than anything else on this list.
- After the wet season: repeat the clean and feed, paying attention to the flex crease and anywhere the leather looks lighter than its surroundings.
- Before storage: dress them, lace them loosely, stuff the toes and put them somewhere dry and cool. Never in a sealed bag.
